Vilhelm Hammershøi's paintings show empty rooms, closed doors and figures seen from behind. Instead of narrative, a concentrated atmosphere emerges, in which the finest gradations of muted colour and barely perceptible changes in recurring motifs make perception itself the subject. The exhibition at Kunsthaus Zürich is the first comprehensive museum exhibition of the artist in Switzerland. Alongside the iconic interiors, it also presents portraits, city views and landscapes, placing his work in a broader art-historical context.
